Description
For May's program, the Historical Society of Marshall County is partnering with the Central Business District, Marshall County Veteran Affairs, and American Legion Riders Post #46 in "A Tribute to Marshall County Veterans" in the west parking lot at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday, May 20 at 5pm. Deb Millizer, director of the CBD, will be speaking about the Military Banner Program, which are in the process of being installed on Marshalltown's major roadways, presenting a check for a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the banners to Kevin Huseboe, director of Marshall County Veteran Affairs, for the American Legion Riders. Matt Gerstandt will be sharing what he experienced during his time of service in the United States Navy.
In addition, this event is the kick-off to help support the Marshall County Veteran Affairs and the American Legion Riders Post 46 who have joined effort with Nicki Johnson for the Local Veterans Appreciation Food Drive. They will be holding a drive-thru drop off at Veterans Memorial Coliseum Parking Lot, located at 20 W. State Street, Marshalltown, Iowa from 5pm – 7pm. If you would like to contribute but cannot on this day, email nickisveteranfooddrive@gmail.com and someone will contact you to make arrangements. They are seeking donations of non-perishable food items, toiletry/hygiene items, and paper products. Their project goal is to help 175-200 veteran households, and any donation or contribution made will be appreciated. They are currently accepting names of local veterans who could benefit from this drive.
To qualify recipients must be currently enlisted, or have served on active duty, in the Reserves or National Guard (including the U.S. Coast Guard) and received an honorable or general discharge (under honorable conditions), be a widow(er) of a spouse who was a veteran, and show eligibility with a DD 214 if requested or the veteran star identity on you state issued ID. They will ask for your legal name, # of people in your household, and a way to contact you. There is a limited number of households they can help, so they encourage people to reach out now.
