Six years ago, Anita Hinkeldey McVey created a food blog (Picnic Life Foodie) to share and preserve her favorite recipes and the stories connected to those recipes. She chose this platform because writing a book seemed much too intimidating. Along the way, she began taking notes about ideas that connected her food and her faith. Today, those ideas (or “Godwinks” as she likes to call them) are bound together in her first book, Because He First Fed Us: Ordinary Meals - Extraordinary Messages. 

This hard-bound book contains thirty devotions which highlight ordinary meals found in the Bible which reveal extraordinary messages. Each devotion is paired with a personal, light-hearted anecdote sharing how God speaks in the love language of food. Briee Roehrig of Carroll, IA says: “The way (Anita) describes food and family makes you feel like you’re sitting at the table with her over a cup of coffee and has you wishing the meal was in front of you. 

The way she ties in the many meals that Jesus served and participated in just makes it all the more captivating. This devotional is food for the soul!” Anita grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa on a steady diet of faith, family, and food. She attended Iowa State University where she received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in statistics. She and her husband, Marty, raised two sons in Waukee. The couple now lives on a small acreage outside of Boone. Anita credits her love for cooking and gardening to her mother and grandmothers, 4-H, and the Food Network show, Chopped. Her favorite things to make for her family are her signature Hot Wings and molasses cookies. 

The book signing event will be held at the Marshalltown location of Stepping Stones Christian Bookstores on Friday, March 11th and the Grinnell location on Saturday, March 12th. The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm each day. 14 W.
