Join Marshalltown community leaders in this forum/panel style discussion focusing on violence and unrest, and the positive contributions of people building their communities and working for positive change. Panelists will talk about their own recent efforts to bridge racial and ethnic divides in the local area and to create an atmosphere of inclusivity.

The panel will include four local community leaders.

  • Alfonso Medina - Medina is a proud 2008 Marshalltown High School graduate. After attending MCC for a year, he transferred to Iowa State University where he received his bachelor degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutions Management Degree. Medina is also an alumni member of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity. He currently resides in Marshalltown. He is the owner and manager at La Carreta restaurant. His family also owns and operates local eatery, El Portal. He is the founder of The Medina Family Scholarship at MCC and most recently, the founder of No Love, No Tacos a non-profit organization based in Marshalltown. Medina focuses on creating philanthropic opportunities through his entrepreneurial endeavors to invest back in his community and make sure everyone is proud to call Marshalltown home.
  • Courtney Reyes – Reyes is the executive director of One Iowa. In addition to advocating for the LGBTQ community, she is a wife, mom, friend, and almost a certified yoga instructor. Authentic leadership is important to Reyes, and she strives to empower the people around her to work towards actual change for the LGBTQ community.
  • Donnielle Wannatee – Wannatee is an MCC student and Meskwaki Advocate. She is active in addressing many of the issues and concerns of the Native American residents of the local area face and works towards unity.
  • Aly Wenner - Wenner is a returning MCC student pursing a degree in Business. She is the Program Director for REM Iowa Community Services where she oversees operations of the residential group homes for individuals with intellectual disabilities and severe mental health needs. The past year she had an opportunity to start and foster communication about equity and diversity by holding a unity rally, talking to community members, and sharing her general passion and vision for more of an inclusive Marshalltown. These opportunities have led to Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer declaring Juneteenth a city holiday, the Marshalltown Community School District re-examining equity efforts within the district, and beginning conversations with local law enforcement to discuss where there is room for growth in serving underprivileged and underrepresented populations.

Each panelist will make a short introduction followed by questions, answers and discussion. The MCC Diversity Committee hopes that events such as these will help empower students to find small ways to create peaceful resolution to problems and to bridge the deepening divide in our country and in the local area.
