Starting wage: $19.06 per hour

Benefits: Part-time regular employees who work more than 520 hours per year are eligible for universal leave and pro-rated holiday pay after one year of continuous employment, based on the total of hours worked in the previous year. Universal leave may be used as sick leave, vacation, bereavement leave, etc. This position also qualifies for the Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS).

General Statement of Duties

A Veterans Memorial Coliseum Building Supervisor works to ensure a positive experience for the patrons by overseeing all aspects of their interaction with Marshalltown Parks & Recreation and have the leadership skills and ability to resolve challenges quickly.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work performed is under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Parks and Recreation Director or designee, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the Parks and Recreation Department employees, other departmental employees, other City employees, and the general public. This position does not supervise others.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

• Events must be started on time. The building supervisor will need to arrive early enough to give sufficient time to set up for the event. The doors should be unlocked 15 minutes prior to the start time;

• Complete opening duties as set forth within the Building Supervisor Manual;

• Maintain the facility with the appropriate sanitizing instructions;

• Ensure that all unnecessary areas of the building remain locked during the course of the shift;

• Set up/out all of the appropriate materials/equipment, if any, and away from spectators. All equipment is to be used by the participants only.

• Required to wear a visible staff shirt. Must remain visible to the patrons in case of issues or questions;

• Required to supervise the whole building, including hallways and restrooms, to ensure that all people within the building are authorized to be in the building. Children are NOT allowed to be running throughout the building. If not participating, they should be sitting with parents;

• Ensure all gym participants carry in a clean, dry pair of shoes for the event.

• No lockers or showers facilities are available;

• Spectators and players are to be respectful at all times. PROFANITY, FIGHTING, BULLYING AND/OR HARASSMENT INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, COMMENTS BASED UPON RACE, ETHNICITY, GENDER, AGE AND/OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION ARE PROHIBITED AND CAUSE FOR EJECTION. Any ejection carries a suspension as noted within the league rules;

• Spectators are not to make calls in a sporting event. If they do make a call or argue with a decision, they are to leave the building. You are not a referee but should be familiar with the league rules in the event that you are asked for an interpretation. Notify management regarding any interpretations the following day in case a team member calls the office regarding said interpretation;

• Ensure patrons do not bring in alcohol, illegal drugs or tobacco, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Monitor for intoxicated patrons/spectators;

• Mop up/clean up any spills, water or salt stains that may be dragged into the building during winter;

• Ensure the building is clean, lights are off and building is secured before leaving;

• Completion of closing procedures as set forth within the Building Supervisor manual;

• Performs any related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of departmental policies and the ability to ensure patrons adhere to said policies;

• Ability to communicate well with department personnel, recreation facility users, and the public using both technical and non-technical language;

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel, supervisory personnel, supervisory personnel, volunteers and patrons as well as to serve as a link between patrons and supervisory personnel;

• Ability to exercise ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

• Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance at work.

• Ability to communicate in English;

• Ability to read labels and follow directions in English.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• 18 years of age or older;

• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

• Red Cross CPR, AED and First Aid certification must be current and on file with Parks and Recreation;

• Trained in Blood borne Pathogens Universal Precautions and Safety Procedures;

• Trained in all Emergency Action Plans including, but not limited to, Severe Weather, Emergency Procedure, Lost Child and Active Shooter;

• Trained in the operation of the floor scrubber and any other equipment needed to clean the facility;

• Trained on all electronic devices and divider screens that are located within the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Required Special Qualifications

• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours.

• Ability to pass background checks, including, but not limited to, a criminal and a child abuse background check, is required for employment and pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Essential Physical Abilities

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate with other recreation personnel, volunteers, Community Service Workers, supervisory personnel and the general public;

• The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles;

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;

• Work is performed in an environment that is not temperature controlled;

• This position contains an element of risk to personal safety.
