MHS Mariachi Concert
Sunday, April 26, 2026 (3:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (CDT)
Description
Celebrating the heritage and diversity of a significant segment of Marshalltown's residents, the MHS Mariachi musical group will perform in an Arts@StPaul's concert Sunday, April 26th, at 3:00pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 201 E. Church Street. The concert is free of charge, but free-will offerings will be donated to help fund the Mariachi program at the school.
The Mariachi program began in 2022 at Marshalltown High School and Miller Middle School. Mrs. Potter directs the 7th and 8th grade ensembles and the high school ensemble is directed by Mr. Umthun and Mr. Lewsadder. The district has provided several years of specific Mariachi training at an out of state conference in the summer. On April 26, 2024, Marshalltown school district brought professional mariachi musician and educator, Roberto Lopez from Rancho High School in Las Vegas to give both Miller and MHS groups a clinician as well as perform with them at a concert. In the fall of 2026, both MHS and Miller mariachi ensembles were given a clinic with the grammy award winning, “123 Andres” duo and later performed with them at a Kaleidescope Concert at the Gallagher Bluedorn PAC on November 1st. The high school mariachi group has performed numerous times in Marshalltown and has traveled to Grinnell, UNI, and Central College.
